LEONARD KIRTZ SCHOOL

Leonard Kirtz School (LKS) is a chartered public school, which provides comprehensive programs and education for students between the ages of 6 and 22 with developmental disabilities. The content of the program is designed to provide social, academic, and vocational programs geared to the individual functioning level of each student. All students are from Mahoning County and are placed at Leonard Kirtz School through their school district of residence.

It is the Board’s intent that all students who enter Leonard Kirtz School increase their cognition and benefit physically and vocationally, so they may reach their fullest potential. Certified teachers and specialists provide instruction through the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP). IEP goals concentrate on developing skills in communication, self-help, functional daily living, social interaction, cognitive development, vocational preparation and vocational training. Leonard Kirtz School offers related services in the areas of speech, physical therapy, and contracted occupational therapy to those students in need of intervention as warranted through a comprehensive evaluation.

Other related services available to all students include nursing, transportation, and case management. All students are provided transportation services to and from school and for field trips. In addition to classroom programs, school-age students receive instruction in six departments each week from certified instructors. Departments include: adaptive physical education, swimming, Snoezelen, music, language arts and horticulture. Social activities are an important part of Leonard Kirtz School. Major events include the Halloween party, holiday fest, spring party, prom and graduation.

Children’s Programming

• The Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD) provides a School Age Program for children with developmental disabilities from age six with continuing services through age twenty-two.

• These intensive and person centered programs offer a wide variety of services for children and families.

• We strive to provide services in a family-friendly environment where services are accessible, flexible and responsive to the students’s needs.

• Our expert staff addresses the student’s needs and insures that the best possible proactive strategies are utilized. • Collaboration with other community agencies and service providers helps to surround the family and child with support to best meet their needs.
